Kindergarten Reading CCSS: Foundational Skills
For Kindergarteners, this Common Core area helps students gain mastery of the concepts of print, the alphabet, and the basic conventions of the written English language. Those goals can be met with support and prompting, and can be differentiated by student skill level. Among the complete standards for this grade, kindergarteners will be asked to: follow words on the page from left to right and top to bottom, recognize that spoken words are represented in writing as a specific sequences of letters, understand that words are separated by spaces in print, recognize and name all the upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet, recognize rhyming words, connect long and short sound with their spellings, read common high-frequency words by sight, read and understand emergent-reader texts.
