Kindergarten CCSS: Reading: Informational Text

For Kindergarteners, this Common Core area helps students gain mastery of the deeper tasks involved in reading a non-fiction text, including picture books. No matter what they are reading, the standards require students to increase the complexity in the texts they read and deepen their understanding of the connections within and between texts. Those goals can be met with support and prompting. Among the complete standards for this grade, kindergarteners will be asked to: retell specific details of a text, describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text, answer questions about new words, name the author and illustrator of a text, describe the relationship between illustrations and the text, compare and contrast two texts on the same topic, and engage in group reading activities.
